Traditional and Expressive Portraiture

Roy has chosen to focus on portraiture and is offering great prices to new customers!

Procedure:

The process of painting a custom portrait involves three main steps:

 1. Selecting the type and style of painting – the patron selects the canvass size, desired scope (full figure, head and shoulders, etc.), formality of clothing, and a artistic style is chosen. Roy can work a range of styles, from more polished traditional portraiture to loser and even expressionistic designs. In this phase, the schedule and sessions are discussed. If the artist is to work from life, the number and timing of the sittings is discussed. If the patron prefers to have photographs taken because of time constraints, arrangements are discussed.

 2. Capturing the moment in sketches and photos – the artist will get to know the sitter, understand their personality and preferences. A determination will be made about where to stage the image, whether on site in the subject’s home, landscape, or at the studio. Once on locale, a number of exploratory poses are made and photos taken. Once the best pose is mutually agreed upon, sketches are made, as well as a two-three hour color study to capture key color progressions and tones for later reference. Photos will be taken for artistic reference only.

 3. Execution & Delivery – Roy will create the portrait from the color studies, sketches and photos. Additional sittings may be required for adjustments. At the artist’s discretion, the subject may preview the work before final completion. The duration will vary based on size and complexity. The process may take from a few weeks to a few months. Final delivery is made once the portrait is complete.
